Ryeland Sheep
Ryelands are a white-faced, polled (no horns), small to medium sized sheep. The Ryeland breed is one of the oldest English sheep breeds going back seven centuries to when the monks of Leominster in Herefordshire bred sheep and grazed them on the rye pastures that give them their name. They were introduced into Australia in 1919 and are classified as an endangered breed by the Rare Breeds Trust of Australia. They are also one of the nine heritage breed that were the foundation of the sheep and wool industry in Australia.
We have chosen this breed as they are very good doers and well suit the hilly pastures of our farm. Ryeland sheep produce excellent quality meat and tasty, succulent fresh lamb.
Currently we have about 30 pure-bred Ryeland ewes and are looking to expand to the flock in the future.
All our breeding stock is registered with the Australian Stud Sheep Breeders Association: http://www.assba.com.au
